Timber and Woodworking Industry

Studies have shown that there is a potential to increase lumber value by over 20 percent if optimum edging and trimming could be performed in sawmills. Even a small part of this percentage would substantially increase the profit of lumber manufacturers. And this can be achieved by utilizing machine vision systems.

Application of machine vision systems in the timber and woodworking industry has a very short return-on-investment period due to the increase in plant throughput, increase in production yields and reduction of waste that can be achieved.

Machine vision and image processing is relatively new or underused area in the timber and woodworking industry. The amount of manual work in many woodworking techniques can be reduced or even eliminated with image processing applications while at the same time increasing the quality and reducing the time. Quality of the timber is important in order to decide where the timber should be used.

In many sawmills, the board quality is still controlled by a human sorter because the defects can vary in many ways, color, area, shape, amount and the type of defects can be in various forms. It is important for sawmills to deliver right quality of boards to their clients so the sorting is depending on the worker.

Present trends such as increasing labor costs and limited supplies of high quality logs have forced lumber manufacturers to increase their efforts to maximize the utilization of raw material. In order to make money in such a competitive business, sawmills must produce the highest possible grade of lumber from each saw log they process.

Machine Vision systems for wood processing must be able to reliably detect and identify many lumber features such as wane, cracks, splits, holes, decay, knots, wormholes and board dimension.

Veneer Grader

Veneer Grader - Automated Vision Inspection for Veneer Sorting or Clipping

Veneer Grader provides an automated vision inspection solution for the consistent grading of veneer sheets for sorting, or for optimizing the clipping of veener ribbon from the lathe.

A Camsensor linear smart camera scans the veneer as it passes, determining every defect type and position using this information to grade the veneer to specifications that can be tailored to the current production requirements. The Camconsole touchscreen display allows operators to select production grading requirements easily and view grading results. All grading results are logged to the Camlink management database, which provide efficient monitoring of production data from a web-browser.

Veneer Grader for sorting of sheets - Veneer sheets leaving the dryer are continuously scanned to determine the grade based on visual and structural quality specification, and ensuring sheet dimensions meet tolerances. Results can be printed onto the sheet, and the sheet is directed to allocated stacker bins.

Veneer Grader for clipper optimization - Veneer ribbon from a peeled log is continuously scanned to determine how it should be clipped to produce the best quality yield whilst removing as many defects as possible. The clipper blade is controlled directly by the system, diverting clipped defects to trash, while good sheets are cut to accurate dimensions with minimal defects.
